MLK & the FBI

A Note From the Dramaturg:

MLK and the FBI

In 1955, when MLK became involved in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Fedural Bureau of Investigations began monitoring King’s activities which continued through the 1960’s (this is why he is checking for bugs in his hotel room).

The FBI monitored King under what was called the Racial Matters Program (a program targeting those involved in “racial politics”).  King was suspected for associating with card-carrying members of the Communist party and in 1962 he fell under the eyes of the FBI’S Communist Infiltration Program.  J. Edgar Hoover was convinced that King himself was a communist and authorized wiretaps of King’s home and the offices of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
