BROADWAY BOUND: Building Characters

Youth: 8-11

At the core of all great performances is a character with a clear story to tell and a specific point of view. In Broadway Bound: Building Characters for ages 8-11, spend five Saturdays with GMT pros focusing on making choices, tapping into physicality, and building character all through the wildly exciting craft of musical theatre performance. Because of fully-formed characters with feelings, attitudes, and intellect, the magic of theatre storytelling is brought to life in some of the biggest and boldest American musicals. Broadway Bound: Building Characters will dive into character creation by exploring:

  • Expressing Emotion

  • Motivating Choices

  • Focusing Physicality

  • Creating Backstory

  • Projection, Dynamics & Breath Control

  • Musical Staging & Dance

AGES 8-11

These five sessions culminate in two presentations for your participants to put their process into practice in front of an audience.

Specifically designed for teens ages 12-17, Broadway Bound: Pop Vocal Musicals unlocks the potential for tuning up vocal dynamics in pop-driven musicals. Pop sound started appearing nearly 50 years ago on Broadway. And today’s Broadway “triple threat” is able to navigate the many styles of musical theatre singing. Pop, pop-rock, rock ‘n’ roll, and vintage pop styles are a major part of the Broadway landscape. 

Broadway Bound: Pop Vocal Musicals is a world of vocal opportunity. Pop musicals range from Wicked, Moulin Rouge!, MJ: The Musical, & Juliet, Jersey Boys, Hell’s Kitchen, American Idiot, and include Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Godspell, Starlight Express, Phantom of The Opera, the genre of Jukebox Musicals and countless others.

GMT’s team includes industry pros with experience on Broadway and in pop music recording, production and performance.

In our five sessions we will:

  • Vocalize to expand pop vocal dynamics

  • Express character through tone and texture

  • Find confidence in step out solos

  • Build clean musical staging and learn how body language punctuates ideas

  • Develop stamina for healthy performing habits
