A mission of Garry Marshall Theatre Education is to provide a brave space for emerging theatre artists through hands-on learning, supportive instruction, and a focus on exploratory collaboration through process-based creation. Our inclusive learning environment promotes professionalism, life skills, confidence, respect, and appreciation for the creative process and its impact.

GMT Theatre Education is thrilled to be offering five unique training programs for ages 8 to 17. These opportunities are led by teaching artists and working professionals in the entertainment industry and the creative education community.

TEEN TECH

Hands-on Training for Technical Theatre & Design

Ages 12-17

  • 9am-3pm

  • JUNE 17-21 & JUNE 24-28 2024 (2-week Summer Camp with a Culmination Presentation with Teen Tech design and support.)

TEEN TECH Summer Camp is a 2-week behind-the-scenes immersion. Discovery, exploration, and learning is a constant in the exciting world of technical theatre and the design departments creating the environment surrounding the story. The industry evolves in technology, and also functions via some of the time-honored, hand-crafted skills of artists and designers. TEEN TECH participants will learn from professionals in scenic design, lighting design, sound design, costume design, and stage management.

  • SCENIC
    Learn safety and technique when working with hand tools and electric drills, electric sanders (no other power tools will be used by participants in this program). We will practice skills involving basic and advanced measuring, designing and presenting designs to a mock creative team, exploring scenic painting finishes and brush techniques, and assembling/building elements for the MUSICAL THEATRE SUMMER CAMP culmination.

  • LIGHTING
    In January of 2024, GMT completed a major lighting advancement in the venue. Students will be able to visit the catwalk, work in the booth, and take apart and reassemble a theatrical lighting fixture. They will learn the difference in function between various lighting fixtures (traditional and LED) and which specific theatrical moments and effects they create. Explore how to hang and focus fixtures. (Additional release form needed if participants would like access to the GMT grid). Navigate cable runs, connecting fixtures in the grid, and how those fixtures are patched into the console. There will also be opportunities to create a full stage look with lights, an isolated look with lights, and observe how lighting affects costume and set design. TEEN TECH Campers will be part of creating the lighting themes and transitions for the MUSICAL THEATRE SUMMER CAMP culmination.

  • SOUND
    Learn sound department skills including: setting up a wireless mic, how to work with performers who wear a LAV mic, patching/connecting a mic/source to a mixing console, programming sound or music cue in QLab, setting up a speaker/stage monitor, and band (orchestra pit) set up. TEEN TECH Campers will work with the GMT sound department to build the audio portions of the MUSICAL THEATRE SUMMER CAMP culmination.

  • COSTUME
    Learn essential hand sewing techniques used in theatrical costuming along with terminology used for tools and materials. Explore costume design through silhouette, color palette, and fabric choices, which inform the characters narrative and the overall mood of the show. Express your artistic vision through collage, drawing, and mood boards. Costume elements will be part of the MUSICAL THEATRE SUMMER CAMP. All TEEN TECH campers will be in the design process of what costume element or accessory defines a musical theatre moment, and will work on developing these costume components.

This is a unique program in the LA area in which participants will be learning technical hands-on skills in conjunction with GMT’s MUSICAL THEATRE SUMMER CAMP culmination presentation at the Garry Marshall Theatre.
