About the show:

“Da na na na” (snap, snap). Garry Marshall Theatre’s youth production of The Addams Family Jr. will be delightfully and frightfully quirky, heartwarming and everything fantastical that makes the Addams such a beloved family!

GMT’s adaptation will be a wonder for young performers to explore the charming, clever and mysterious musical that has had audiences captivated since its Broadway debut in 2010. With the signature GMT focus of guiding young people through the multifaceted world of storytelling, the ensemble will work with professionals to create a unique and exciting production.

Who are the Addams?

Charles Addams was a celebrated American cartoonist whose dark yet humorous cartoons in The New Yorker introduced the world to the iconically peculiar Addams Family in 1938. The kooky, spooky family has been reimagined in iconic television shows, films, and, yes - Broadway. Featuring music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the musical is a celebration of family, love, and embracing what makes us unique.

The plot goes something like this:

When Wednesday Addams falls in love with a perfectly ordinary boy named Lucas, she faces the ultimate family challenge: how to bring two very different worlds together. As Lucas's very conventional family arrives for a dinner unlike any they have ever experienced, the two households hilariously collide. Filled with big personalities, surprises lurking in the shadows, and showstopping musical numbers, this story celebrates love, being one’s true self, and the unbreakable bonds of family, no matter how unusual!

All performers will participate in ensemble musical theatre learning. They will be encouraged to build their skills in large choreographed numbers focusing on Broadway style patterns, formations, and dancing while vocalizing and working with precision.

Young performers will attend rehearsals scheduled for their age group. Some rehearsals will be full company (all ages). The first two rehearsals will focus on ensemble work, and becoming familiar with foundational building performance skills. The third rehearsal will also include the audition portion of building a show.

Everyone is automatically part of the ensemble. Our goal is to ensure every performer has the opportunity to shine in a role that encourages their growth and recognizes their strengths, while maintaining a collaborative and fun rehearsal process.

Details about potential casting opportunities:
Young performers are often new to the rigors and responsibility of learning and performing a role outside of the ensemble. All will be given the opportunity to audition during the third rehearsal. GMT will provide the material for these general style auditions, based solely off of what has been covered within the first two weeks of rehearsal.

While casting of specific roles will primarily align with age groups, there may be occasions where the directing team will identify a participant best suited for a role listed in another age group. If this occurs, we may offer them that role, with the understanding that they will join the other age group’s rehearsals for the rest of the rehearsal process, scene work and role preparation.

The most essential learning happens within the ensemble. But there will be multiple casting opportunities through double casting.
